This article presents Brazil as an example of a Latin American nation which is leading the effort in converting credit and debit cards to chip cards. The focus for introducing smart chip cards is on credit and debit cards, transit applications, payments and cellular phones. The advantages cited for smart cards include costs reduction, flexible fares, fraud reduction, and more accurate data on flow and travel habits of passengers.
