The Port of Hamburg is celebrating 800 years of existence, and its vitality is unimpaired. Even in the future, it will undoubtedly remain the chief source of economic strength for the City of Hamburg. In the articles that comprise this feature, personalities in public life in the city take this octocentenary as the occasion to describe and comment on specific trends. The main ones are Hamburg's importance as an economic center in relation to the port, the port as a center for trade and industry, shipping in the Hanseatic city, port shipping, and the prospects for the different career groups in the port.
