Abstract
Urban travel habits in the United States will change in the next decade in response to energy, environmental, and economic problems and may create a wider gap between what the automobile does well and what conventional public transportation does well. Paratransit can limit the gap and could be serving more passengers than conventional transit in the 1990's. Paratransit is shared riding. It consists of many forms of service between conventional, scheduled, fixed-route public transit, and the private use of the automobile.
