Abstract
Intersection is critical components of an urban transportation network, and the control types of the intersections have an important influence on the traffic flow. The HCM2000 included a figure, Exhibit 10-15, for intersection control type selections. That figure is however from a source external to the HCM. This paper presents a new set of charts for selecting intersections control types among the options of two-way stop sign, signal, and roundabout. Particularly, level of service (LOS) is chosen as the performance index for type selection. 8160 combinations of different levels of demand and a total of 24,480 simulation runs are designed by using Traffic simulation software, four scenarios with 5%, 10%, 15%, and 20% of the different volumes are assigned to make left turns. Each test is made respectively with signalized intersection, two-way stop unsignalized intersection and roundabout. The new set of charts is given as the base of the intersection control type choice and comprehensive benefits for intersection analysis.
