Abstract
This paper compares the methods proposed by Giroud, U.S. Federal Highway Administration (FHWA), and the French Committee on Geotextiles and Geomembranes (CFGG) for the design of geotextile filters. The comparison shows that, in the case of soils with a large coefficient of uniformity, the FWHA and CFGG methods lead to the selection of a geotextile filter that may cause piping of the soil, which may in turn trigger a catastrophic failure in the case, for example, of an earth dam. For covering abstract of the conference, see IRRD 836241. (Author/TRRL)
