Abstract

Utilizing a classical model for the deflection of railway track under load, a method for measuring track modulus using existing track recorder cars is investigated. The method requires the measurement of the relative vertical deflections of the wheels of a 3-axle vehicle truck. Because the measurement is sensitive to vertical track profile imperfections, a statistical model of real track is used to determine the track sample lengths required to estimate track modulus to a given accuracy.
