Abstract

This paper, which appears in a compendium of conference papers, provides an overview of geographic information system (GIS) applications in transit. Research projects on the use of GIS in transit have been limited. The purpose of this paper is to discuss the general use of GIS in transportation, to summarize GIS applications in transit, to present the basic framework for a transit GIS, to identify the benefits and obstacles associated with transit GIS implementation, and to present experiences in the development of a GIS for use in transit planning and analysis. The paper concludes with a summary of lessons learned for those contemplating the development and use of GIS in their respective organizations.
