Paralyzing traffic congestion continues to increase in the U.S.; in the largest 68 U.S. metropolitan areas, motorists wasted $78 billion stuck in traffic in 1999, according to the Texas Transportation Institute. A number of remedies have been proposed over the past decade, including improving urban freeway system bottlenecks and funding more urban rail projects. This commentary discusses the advantages of High-Occupancy/Toll (HOT) lanes and Bus Rapid Transit as potential solutions to the worsening traffic congestion problem in the U.S.
