Improvement on traffic safety on Jordanian roads through a comprehensive plan of education training and control of drivers

Objectives: Drivers are involved in more than 85% of all accidents in Jordan because they are facing rapid developments in the traffic on the road. Drivers should be subjected to intensive traffic education when they are children, proper driving training when they are adults, and proper control when they start driving on the road. Methods: Three Questionnaires were designed and distributed to trained drivers, drivers committing accidents and to pedestrians. Results: Analysis of questionnaires revealed defects in traffic safety awareness among drivers and pedestrians. It reflected defects in training centers and trainers, and defects in control on drivers on the road. Conclusions: A comprehensive traffic safety plan is suggested which includes a complete traffic safety education curriculum at schools. It includes suggestions to improve training centers, trainers, and training programs of centers and of testing committees. Control of drivers should be the responsibility of the family, citizens, and the society. Opinion of drivers, members of the society, and specialists should be taken into consideration in drafting plans, programs and regulations.
