On the Road to Funding Transportation's Future

Abstract

This article examines funding for transportation in light of the expiration of SAFETEA-LU in 2010 and the installation of a new presidential administration in 2009. It describes funding for transportation over the past few years, programs such as New Starts/Small Starts, rail safety legislation and corrections to SAFETEA-LU still pending Congressional approval, the Omnibus appropriations bill that passed in the final days of 2007, and the impact of $100-a-barrel oil. The author predicts the upcoming elections will have a greater impact on the surface transportation industry. A Democratic administration would be more philosophically focused on creating densities around transit stations, streetcar systems, and bus rapid transit.
