Abstract
A report is given on the construction and in particular the erection of a 200 M span steel arch bridge over the Danube. The prestressed concrete superstructure of the approach bridge was constructed in sections using a mobile formwork gantry. The erection of the river crossing was carried out as follows. Initially the stiffening girder and deck were built on the approach spans and then launched across the river using the incremental launching method with five temporary support towers. It was subsequently lowered to the correct levels. The arch was then similarly assembled on the approach spans and launcehd across to the other side using the stiffening girder as the launching track. Following the alignment and closing of the joints and the connection of the hangers, the completed arch system could be released by raising with hydraulic jacks. A test loading gave very good agreement between calculated and measured values. (TRRL)
