Abstract
The prediction of the fatigue life of highway bridges requires estimates of traffic volume and stress ranges at critical details. Accurate load and stress range histograms can be obtained by monitoring highway bridges with weigh-in-motion instrumentation. The case study of the bridge on interstate highway 70 over highway 340, 40 km west of Baltimore, Maryland in the USA, is presented. It includes a comparison of three alternative methods of fatigue life evaluation based on the AASHTO specifications. (A) For the covering abstract of the conference see IRRD 850834.
