Abstract

This book was written primarily as a textbook for senior undergraduate and post-graduate students of aviation, aeronautics and transportation and related fields. There are eleven chapters. Chapter 1 gives the introduction and historical development of transportation in general and air transportation in particular. Chapter 2 is an overview of civil aviation and the regulation of air transport, while Chapter 3 discusses commercial air transport operations. Chapter 4 presents the theories, concepts and models in transport (and aviation) as well as urban structure and location. Chapters 5 to 7 present actual research works in airport systems planning, their calibration, as well as their evaluation, results, conclusions and recommendations with emphasis on Nigerian Airports. Chapter 8 is a comparison of three airports/regions and passenger characteristics. The airports are Lagos (Nigeria), Birmingham (UK) and Newark (USA), which were selected for certain similarities which are explained in the text. Chapter 9 is an examination of the effects of the ground aids during aircraft landing operations, while Chapter 10 documents the procedure for determining aircraft gate requirements which practitioners in the less-developed world may still find useful. Chapter 11 suggests the way forward and presents a long term vision for Nigerian and African aviation to ensure their survival and competitiveness.
