Abstract

This paper gives an overview of road Intelligent Transport Systems (ITS) in Europe and provides case studies on innovations in transport and institutional issues in relation to implementing pan-European services and applications through the deployment of ITS supported by the European Commission. A selection of application areas are featured because they are specifically concerned with fundamental issues related to the deployment of ITS in the road sector on a pan-European basis - as part of an effort to stimulate harmonised and synchronised deployment of ITS systems and services on the Trans-European Road Network and to promote convergence between national/regional planning in the road transport field in Europe.
