Abstract
Iowa county engineers are responsible for over 20,000 bridges on the secondary road system. As their budgets are limited, many county engineers design and construct short span bridges with their own labor forces. With the assistance of several county engineers, the research team is developing two bridge alternatives for use on low-volume roads. The primary objective of this investigation is to test the alternatives in the laboratory to obtain strength and structural behavior data.
