Abstract
This article discusses efforts that have begun in replacing the aging 107 year old Kate Shelley Bridge in Iowa across the Des Moines River. Refurbishing and strengthening the existing bridge would have been prohibitive. In addition, the currrent speed restriction of 25 mph across the bridge has created a bottleneck in unit train operations. Tne new Boone High Bridge will be able to accommodate trains on both tracks at the same time and traveling 70 mph. Once completed, the bridge will be the highest double-track bridge in the world.
