Abstract
This article describes development of the air express industry in the U.S. from 1970 through 1990. During this 20-year period, the industry matured from infancy. Services provided by air express firms began to define the acceptable level of service in the minds of many shippers. Air express development also impacted other modes of U.S. transportation. And, while U.S. air express enabled firms to expand and improve their product and service offerings, many businesses took for granted these services. This article looks at the origin of major U.S. air express services. It describes the distinguishing characteristics of air express in the U.S. and the impact of U.S. laws on this industry. Competition with the U.S. Postal Service and consolidation within the industry also are discussed. The trend toward globalization of business is covered because of its impact on air express in the U.S.
