Abstract
A Metrorail Passenger Survey shows that park-and-ride users account for 23% of Metrorails peak period ridership. Station parking is a critical linkage between the flexibility of the potential transit rider and the efficiency and speed of mass transit. However, programmed parking spaces have always fallen well short of demand estimates. Several WMATA (Washington Metropolitan Area Transit Authority) initiatives to increase parking supply are noted. Commuter parking spaces funded in conjunction with UMTA's (Urban Mass Transportation Administration) suburban mobility initiative are listed. Efforts and funding for parking improvements in Prince William County, Virginia are described.
