Abstract
New rail passenger services that combine the elements of conventional light rail service with the ability to economically access lower density areas are gaining growing interest. An overview of the technical features of Light Rail Multiple Unit (LRMU) are presented in this paper. Some of the system's technical advantages are discussed along with how the Light Diesel Multiple Unit can be used to economically introduce new service while maintaining the flexibility to convert to partial or total electric operation at some future date.
