Abstract
The Ministry of Transportation of Ontario sponsored, in 1991, a smart card demonstration project in Ajax, a town with a population of 60,000, and a transit system with 20 full size buses and five smaller buses. As the system was an instant success with both passengers and transit personnel, the Ministry decided to install a similar system in a larger (population 140,00) town of Burlington in 1995. The article provides a detailed description of the system as well as an evaluation of the project. Because of the success of these two projects, the oldest and perhaps the most advanced, fully operational smart card transit systems in North America, the Ministry has commissioned a formal study to examine the possibility and implications of introduction of a province-wide smart card system.
