Abstract
The technical and economic optimization of asphalt overlay thickness on old concrete pavements was the target of a test track constructed in Lower Austria in the years 1988 to 1990. A conventional type of overlay was compared with thinner overlays using various stress absorbing interlayers. After a period of four years tentative conclusions about the behaviour and performance of the different solutions can be drawn. The best results so far show a conventional 120 mm overlay and the use of geogrids. The first will need a longer time of observation. Regarding costs, overlays with the use of stress absorbing interlayers vary between +/- 10% from those for a conventional overlay. (A) For the covering abstract see IRRD 857794.
