Abstract

This article discusses the aesthetics and appearance of the new Leonard P. Zakim Bunker Hill Bridge, a part of the Central Artery/Tunnel Project (The Big Dig) in Boston, Massachusetts. This bridge structure is of the cable-stayed type, and will provide a total of 8 lanes of traffic capacity when it opens in Fall 2002. At 185 ft, it is the widest cable-stayed bridge in the world and the first major hybrid cable-stayed bridge in the U.S., using steel in the main span and concrete in the back spans. Other aspects of this unique structure are also described.
