Abstract
Swelling and suction phenomena occur only in fine-grained unsaturated soils and can be explained through similar mechanism, influenced by the same factors. This motivates the trend to take advantage of suction measurements for an expansive potential estimation. The design procedure for estimating the swelling pressure utilizing suction meaurements is proposed in the paper. New apparatus: modified Proctor device, sucoedometer, consolidometer with TDR unit were introduced for laboratory measurements of suction pressure. The test results on undisturbed and remolded unsaturated clay samples from foundations of two projects in Poland and in Iraq were used to develop a mathematical relationship between swelling pressure and suction pressure.
