Abstract

This article describes a conference recently held in Australia which examined experiences and concerns regarding road pricing. Papers delivered at the conference looked at issues such as the need for road pricing, the pros and cons of its usage, technology requirements, and involvement of local governments and the private sector. The concept of whether road pricing is a generator of revenues or a traffic management tool was addressed. Despite the fact that there were strong opinions for and against road pricing, the general consensus was that significant barriers to the public acceptance of road pricing still exist, and that there is a need for effective marketing if road pricing is to become successful.
