Abstract
The author states that good street lighting increases traffic safety in busy streets and roads. Good street lighting is characterized by good average luminance and good uniformity of luminance in the roadway, good glare limitation and good visual guidance, of which glare limitation is the most difficult problem to solve in practice. He recommends better street lighting without increased energy consumption, and proves with a practical example that this can be done by using better light sources and fittings than before. The increased cost of light road surfaces in comparison to dark ones may in many cases be compensated for by the reduced cost of the street lighting required. The road surface should also be rough in order to give diffused reflexion when it is wet. /TRRL/
