Abstract
In this article, the author describes a method for investigating the consequences of freight transport growth. Different factors influence the quantity of freight transportation, including economic growth, technology, infrastructure, and organization. The author's method is based on in-depth case studies (the case can be a company, a product, or a supply chain) that have been influenced by any or many of these factors. Topics include determining the indicators for freight transport, measuring transport, transport content, and transport distance and transport efficiency. Case studies discussed include the transport content of rye bread (two examples), the transport distance and transport efficiency of a carpet manufacturer, and the growth of transport compared to the growth of the economy. The author concludes that this methodology can be used to establish a general framework, with information that can be generalized to a better understanding of the freight transport sector.
