THE AUTHOR STRESSES THE IMPORTANCE OF STUDYING THE SWELLING OF THE SUBGRADE CAUSED BY FROST AND SUBSEQUENT SUBSIDENCE OCCURRING DURING THE THAW FOR DETERMINING THE STABILITY OF THE CARRIAGEWAY CALCULATED ON THE BASIS OF ULTIMATE DEFORMATION. THE EXPECTED WINTER SWELLING CAN BE DETERMINED FROM THE QUANTITY OF WATER ACCUMULATING IN THE SOIL DURING FROST. THE SWELLING LIMIT FOR THE SUBGRADE CAN BE ESTABLISHED TAKING INTO ACCOUNT THE ABSOLUTE NECESSITY OF ENSURING THE EVENNESS OF THE SURFACING DURING WINTER. CALCULATION METHODS ARE PORPOSED BASED ON THE BENDING THEORY FOR BEAMS AND THIN SLABS UNDER VARIOUS CONDITIONS OF EDGE CONNECTION. IT WAS OBSERVED THAT THE DEFORMATION OF THE SURFACING CAUSED BY SWELLING DEPENDS ON THE TYPE OF SURFACING, HOMOGENEITY OF THE SUBGRADE SOIL AND ITS MOISTURE /LCPC/RRL/
