Abstract
The improvement ot traffic safety is a pressing objective of traffic policy. The deployment of variable message signs (VMS) for dynamic, i.e. traffic- and weather-dependent, control of driver behaviour has proved to be an effective means of improving the traffic situation, esp. on the expressway network. The positive effects of traffic control systems on safety have been proved in many studies. In most cases investigated so far, the accident situation could be clearly improved by means of variable message sign systems - even above proportion compared to the accident development of similar areas.
