Abstract

Construction of the Big Walnut Outfall Augmentation Sewer in Columbus, Ohio, a 4-kilometer long, 3.66-meter i.d. project, includes a crossing of six two-lane roads, a parking lot, the Big Walnut Creek and an existing sanitary sewer. The contract mandated an EPB machine, as well as dewatering, sealed shafts, slurry walls or auger casings. In addition, the tunnel boring machines (TBMs) were to include the latest enhancements to control and monitor settlement, and an extensive monitoring array.
