Abstract

It is described how New York State Department of Transportation selected an exodermic deck for a bridge project to solve two major problems: rapid design and construction; and the need for HS-20 load rating. The bridge carries County Road 61 over the Mohawk River in St. Johnsville, New York. Since it was possible to close the structure to traffic during the rehabilitation, the concrete component of the bridge deck was poured in-place, saving time and money, and providing a monolithic concrete surface without a need for a separate wearing surface. The details of the construction are briefly described. The exodermic deck permitted the bridge to be rated for HS-20 loads while assuring rapid construction. The new deck is signigficantly stiffer and stronger than the reinforced deck it replaced.
