Abstract
The aim of this report has been to calculate the maintenance costs of steel and concrete bridges and also to examine which damage is most frequent. Bridges in the western part of Sweden with a length of 40 M or more were surveyed. The interest was focused on damage to the bridge deck. Descriptions are given of most of the damage and examples of different ways of measuring damage are given. The part of the bridge which has most damage is the edge beam. A summary is given of maintenance costs for different types of bridges, with consideration of the most usual damage to respective types. (TRRL)
