Abstract
The paper describes new techniques which have been developed and applied in Western Australia for the maintenance of both timber and concrete bridges. It also discusses economic aspects of bridge management including the level of maintenance expenditure required in relation to bridge replacement value, the frequency of inspections, the options of undertaking work by direct labour or by contract, and the choice of bridge replacement or major renovation and strengthening.
