Abstract
Neutron attenuation and flux in the 4.25-ft shielding used around a Cockcroft-Walton accelerator neutron source have been measured. Additional measurements of gamma radiation from neutron capture in the shield and of x rays produced by the accelerator itself are also reported. Fast neutron relaxation length in the shield is found to be 15.0 plus or minus 0.5 cm. Calculations of neutron fluxes and relaxation lengths and of gamma radiation dose rates compare well with theoretical values. X-ray shielding is deemed adequate and the gamma dose rate is found to be a fraction of the neutron dose rate. (D.C.W.)
