Abstract
This paper provides details of the road network components and how they relate to each other and sets down the function and standards applicable to each component. The relationships between the road, the car and driver behaviour are explored to show some of the theoretical concepts and models which are available to the traffic engineer for use in the analysis of traffic problems and the design of network components. Lastly the principles used in the traffic design of roads and intersections are outlined in order to establish an understanding of the many engineering factors which are involved in the operation of the road system.
