This article relates how America West Airlines, which had succumbed to the impact of September 11 as well as having an overly rapid expansion program, has come back to life by following a budget model and adopting an ultra-low cost structure. Establishing a program which has focused on a having a flexible walkup fare and introducing a day-of- departure first class upgrade, AWA has become one of the most profitable low cost carriers in the U .S. Selected financial, traffic, and fleet composition data are included in the article.
