Abstract
The paper tests the hypothesis that land use patterns affect non-work trip generation rates. The test is based on a regression analysis of non-work trip frequencies that were obtained from southern California travel diary data. The travel diary data are linked to information about population density, land use mix and street grid patterns near each travel diary respondent's place of residence. The study's results suggest that transportation policy can not be based on the knowledge of the link between non-work travel and land use patterns at the neighborhood level.
