IDEAS AND ACTIONS: AN INTERPRETATIVE HISTORY OF THE HIGHWAY RESEARCH BOARD: 1920-1968

The Executive Committee of the Highway Research Board authorized a commemorative history of the Board to be written in connection with the observance of its Golden Anniversary. This long version provides the essential facts in full. The interpretive history outlines the reason for the board's creation, its role, and its impact on highway transportation, administration, and technology. The narrative unfolds the evolution of ideas and actions of the highway research community. Annotated chronologies are included for the National Academy of Sciences and the Highway Research Board. Appendixes provide lists of highway research needs, 1920-1966; inventories of highway research, 1922-1965; bylaws adopted November 11, 1920; the research problem in 1921; and chairmen, directors, and assistant directors, 1920-1967.
