Abstract

This outline looks at the historical development of and trends relating to public transit contracting in San Diego, California. The data reported covers approximately the period from the 1970s to the year 2000. At present, the city of San Diego has 5 active contracts for fixed-route and paratransit bus services utilizing a total of 212 vehicles. For fiscal year 2000, 42% of bus and trolley revenue miles were contracted, and 54% of all Metropolitan Transit Service (MTS) bus services were contracted; 76% of all MTS routes were contracted.
