Abstract

This report examines the questions and issues that surround the prospect of the Government setting standards of automobile fuel economy and effects of alternative policies that might be employed to achieve these standards. Policies that would affect fuel consumption and their likely impact on new car sales, the composition of the car stock, and the amount of gasoline consumed are assessed.
