Abstract

The article discusses the major modernization program launched by the Portuguese Railways (CP). The company is investing $US 750 million up to 2006 to modernize the passenger fleet through a mixture of new build and refurbishment. Tne renewal is being spearheaded by the introduction of a fleet of 220 km/h electric tilting trains. Although the company's traditional image as a rather old fashioned, slow means of transportation is being transformed through a radical modernization of its passenger train fleet, the current budget still excludes the purchase of replacements for the more than 30 years old locomotive fleet.
