Abstract
THE USE OF FLY ASH WITH PORTLAND CEMENT AS BINDER EFFECTS A REDUCTION IN THE HEAT OF HYDRATION. THE ABSOLUTE AMOUNT OF HEAT GENERATED IS DEPENDENT ON THE TYPE OF CEMENT, THE REACTION TIME AND VERY SUBSTANTIALLY ON THE FLY ASH CONTENT OF THE MIX. IT IS REDUCED WITH INCREASING FLY ASH CONTENT. THE REDUCTION IN THE HEAT OF HYDRATION DOES NOT EXHIBIT A LINEAR RELATIONSHIP TO THE AMOUNT OF FLY ASH ADDED. THE REDUCTION IS RATHER LESS IN MIXES HAVING A HIGH CEMENT CONTENT THAN IN THOSE HAVING A GREATER ADDITION OF FLY ASH. PURE FLY ASH DID NOT EXHIBIT HYDRAULIC PROPERTIES WITHIN THE TIME INTERVALS CONSIDERED AND THEREFORE DOES NOT PRODUCE ANY HEAT OF HYDRATION.
