Abstract
Reviewed is the research on human performance in automated systems in relation to applications in aviation. Also analyzed is a number of aviation incidents and accidents that have been associated with automation usage. Identified are several factors that appear to contribute to effective human-automation interaction. They include: identifying types of information processing to which automation is applied; choosing the appropriate level of automation; making automation state indicators and behaviors salient and understandable; calibrating operator trust in automation; balancing operator mental workload; and considering dynamic funtion allocation, or adaptiva automation.
