Abstract

Despite his continuing impeachment trail, President Clinton has maintained a focus on his fiscal 2000 budget proposal. Perhaps most visible is the money to be sought for transportation. The Department of Transportation will request a record $6.1 billion for public transit and $2.2 billion to implement innovative community-based programs under the Transportation Equity Act for the 21st Century. The White House's livability agenda calls for communities to create regional transportation strategies, improve existing roads and transit, and encourage broader use of alternative transportation.
