Abstract
This paper will introduce the Electronic Flagman Level Crossing Signal System, as providing a means of warning motorists of the approach of trains. Problems encountered with conventional track circuit operated level crossing signalling systems, including high installation cost, failure of the train to make the circuit, and giving excessive warning time, can be avoided by using the Electronic Flagmen Level Crossing Signal System. The reduced cost and ease of installation of this level crossing signal system should encourage an increase in the number of crossings with warning signals. This, and the ability of the system to indicate if it is not operational, should result in significantly fewer incidents occurring at level crossings.
