SMARTFREIGHT – A Generic Approach to ITS for Smart Urban Freight Distribution

Abstract

This paper provides an overview of the conceptual and logical parts of the current work on a framework architecture in the SMARTFREIGHT project. SMARTFREIGHT aims to make urban freight transport more efficient, environmentally friendly and safe by targeting challenges related to traffic management, freight distribution management, and the coordination between the two. SMARTFREIGHT works with on-board units as means for communication with the freight vehicles. Solutions for traffic management of individual freight vehicles and information exchange are specified by means of a top-down approach that provides a generic and holistic view upon freight distribution to support deployment in different European cities. The ARKTRANS framework architecture for ITS is used as a starting point for the work.
