Abstract

In Marble Canyon, Arizona, a near mirror image of the first Navajo Bridge is being constructed upstream from the original steel braced spandrel arch, which spans the Colorado River in the Grand Canyon. The new Navajo Bridge is longer, weighs less, carries heavier vehicles, and costs $14 million. This article describes the dimensions of the new bridge and discusses design and construction issues. Excavation was particularly complicated because the contractor was prohibited from dropping materials into the canyon.
