EXPANSION STARTS AS METRORAIL'S CORE NETWORK IS COMPLETED

Abstract

The opening of the final section of the Washington DC Area Metropolitan Transit Authority's Metrorail Green Line ends a 31 year construction project to complete the 166km, 83 station system, included in the area's Adopted Regional Rail System plan. This 10.5km five-station extension is expected to increase rail traffic by 22,000 daily trips, so helping to alleviate fast growing population growth and congestion problems of Washington Metropolitan area. Metrorail now has a current weekday average of over 600,000 trips, where 40% of those working in the core employment area served by Metrorail arrive by public transport. Key to a high level of public transport use has been a number of land-use projects developed to exploit the potential of rail services. Details are given of future expansion plans to Dulles Airport.
