Abstract
This article focuses on the integrated safety system (ISS) concept as applied to automotive sensors and rollover conditions. It examines automotive rollover situations and the technologies that are being developed to address it. It first discusses vehicle rollover phenomena, pre-rollover vehicle motion, rollover initiation, and modeling issues. Rollover sensors, with focus on angular rate sensors (ARS), are then discussed. A single ARS and a single lateral accelerometer are used in the rollover-sensing algorithm which is presented. The article concludes with a brief overview of various rollover countermeasures.
