Abstract
The design and construction of the award winning, 29 span, plate girder road bridge is described. The River Ouse is 290 M wide between the flood banks but peat and soft clays on either side of the river, and the need for 22.9 M of navigational headroom led to a total bridge length of 1340 M. The piers are reinforced concrete portal frames and the deck consists of eight steel plate girders acting compositely with a reinforced concrete deck slab. The 2 M deep girders are haunched to 3.9 M at the river piers. A 40 M wide casement under the whole length of the bridge and an access road for maintenance purposes were included in the contract. Close inspection will be carried out from mobile equipment operating from the deck and paved areas under the approach spans. Scaffolding will be used for the river spans. /TRRL/
