Abstract

In this paper, the major reasons for selecting video detection systems for traffic monitoring and incident detection are discussed, together with some of the underlying detection principles. Video detection systems offer the information needed by traffic managers for the efficient handling of incidents. Standard traffic parameters (for example, volume and speed) can also be provided. Accurate tracking of the queue tail position and calculation of the expected travel time lie within reach. The solution of using video lives up to all major quality criteria : It is cost effective, reliable and transparent. Installation requirements essentially focus on the characteristics of the camera. Out of the more than 1500 video detectors installed world-wide, the results of some sites are presented in this paper.
